Helen Mattock

Hastings resident, Helen Maxine Mattock, 88, passed away Sunday, September 20, 2009 at The Kensington, Hastings, Nebraska.

Services will be Monday, October 12, 2009; 10:00 A.M. at North Shore Assembly of God Church, Hastings with Pastor Tony Anderson officiating. Burial will be at East Lawn Cemetery, Bladen, Nebraska. Memorials may be given to North Shore Assembly of God Church.

Helen was born November 26, 1920 in Webster County, Nebraska to Howard H. & Mabel M. (Oberg) Spence. Her mother passed away when she was 10 days old, and her father passed away when she was 4 years old. She was raised by her maternal grandparents, Ben & Mary Oberg of Bladen, Nebraska. She attended and graduated from Bladen High School. She also attended Kearney State College for 2 years and completed their Commercial Program. She worked in various offices and worked many years as a legal secretary. She taught rural school for 3 ½ years until she married Gerald Mattock on November 27, 1941 and he preceded her in death on March 20, 1999. She accompanied him during his military assignments during World War II, until he left for overseas duty. She then worked at the Naval Ammunition Depot in Hastings until his return in 1946. After his return, he finished his college degree and started to work for the Department of Agriculture as a Soil Conservationist. They were transferred several places and made their home in Hebron, Geneva, Pierce, Columbus, and Scottsbluff. They retired in 1980 and moved to Hastings in 1987. She was very active in her church and also in many other social and civic clubs. She was a member of North Shore Assembly of God Church.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, husband, and one grandson, Trenton Mattock, who passed away December 24, 2008, after fighting cancer for 21 years.
