Herbert was born May 13, 1940 in Clay Center, Nebraska to Siebelt & Ella (Gartner) Hinrichs. He was baptized in the Lutheran faith at St. Paul's Lutheran Church west of Glenvil, Nebraska. He started school in District 71 west of his boyhood home and finished high school in Glenvil, Nebraska graduating in 1958. He grew up on a farm just across the road from St. Paul's Lutheran Church. The farm was operated by his parents Siebelt & Ella Hinrichs, before them it was owned by his great-grandparents, Siebelt & Elizabeth Goldenstein who pioneered the farm on a timber claim in 1876. Herbert suffered very early in life with depression and other mental problems. In spite of coping with these problems he was employed for several years at Dutton Lainson in Hastings and Johnson Cashway Company. As his problems became more severe he moved to Lincoln, Nebraska to live in a sheltered home where he resided for many years. Later in life he developed Parkinson's disease and could no longer care for himself. He moved to Perkins Pavilion at Good Samaritan Society in Hastings and lived there for many years. Herbert suffered many problems in his life. He did not complain nor blame anyone or anything for his situation and did the best he could.
Herbert was preceded in death by his parents; sister & brother-in-law, Carolyn & Robert Rist; and nephew, Raymond Hinrichs.
