Working for the World War II effort, she took night classes and graduated from Wayne State, later getting a Master's Degree from Kearney. She taught elementary school for Hastings Public Schools for 27 years. Iona was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Pro-Cathedral.
Iona was a very active volunteer in her community. Serving 15 years as St. Mark's representative to Church Women United, and on the church Altar Guild for 17 years. She tutored students at St. Michael's and helped in the library at Hawthorne School. Iona belonged to HARSP/HARTA a retired school personnel service group and Delta Kappa Gamma, also a service organization. She gave blood to the Red Cross and delivered Meals on Wheels for 10 years. Iona was a member of the YMCA and enjoyed Aqua-sizing with her friends and sister. She also was an active member of the YWCA. She enjoyed several bridge clubs with her friends and sister, and traveling with a group of 5, known as the "Nebraska Six Pack" to the bus drivers. She liked to tell visitors she had been in every state except 2 ... and she was going there tomorrow. Iona was a Special Aunt, taking on the responsibility of God Mother to her three nieces and two Great nephews. She was very generous with her time and attention, doing anything that was needed for anyone.
