Jacob 'Jake' Thiel, 74, of 1135 Hewett, Hastings, Nebraska, died Sunday, November 30, 2003 at BryanLGH Medical Center East, Lincoln, Nebraska.
Services will be Thursday, December 4, 2003; 10:00 A.M. at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church with Pastor Frank Kerkemeyer officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Hastings, Nebraska.
Jacob 'Jake' Thiel was born May 14, 1929 in Minatare, Nebraska to Henry & Anna M. (Temple) Thiel. He graduated from high school and served in the United States Army during the Korean War from December 11, 1950 to November 28, 1952. He was awarded the Combat infantry badge for excellent performance of duty under enemy fire in Korea. He was a member of the Second Infantry Division, which gained fame in two of the hardest fought battles of the Korean war. On April 5, 1953, he married Naomi Engelhardt in Hastings, Nebraska. He was on the police force for 10 years, Chief Deputy in Adams County, 16 years and was an Adams County Sheriff for 4 years. After his retirement from law enforcement, he and his wife owned and operated Jake's Diner in Clay Center, Nebraska. He was a member of First St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Southern Hills Country Club, Eagles Aerie #592 and V.F.W. He was a past member of the Elks, American Legion and past President of Sheriffs & Peace Officers Association.
