James Standley

January 30, 1923 — August 18, 2003

James Lloyd Standley, 80, of 735 N. Cedar, died Monday, August 18, 2003 at his home.

Services will be Thursday, August 21, 2003; 2:00 P.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel with Rev. Ralph Ford officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.

James Lloyd Standley was born January 30, 1923 in Fort Scott, Kansas to James Lloyd & Nancy Mae (Lambert) Standley. After graduation from the Fort Scott High School in 1941, he worked for a short time in St. Louis, Missouri as a government inspector of trucks being built for the army. In 1942, he married Ruth Branstetter also of Fort Scott. Drafted into the army, he assigned to the Army air force where he served until 1946 as Link Trainer instructor teaching pilots to fly by instruments. After his discharge from the service, he earned a B.S and M.S. from Kansas State College at Pittsburg, Kansas, taught at the Kinsley, Kansas High School for seven years, worked as an insurance salesman for State Farm Insurance and served, with Ruth, as house parents of the Twin Oaks Boys Home in Hutchinson, Kansas. In 1956, the family moved to Hastings where Jim was named head of the mathematics department and taught until 1988. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, National Mathematics Association, AAUP, and for 63 years, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. While in Kinsley, Kansas, he was a member of the Kiwanis Club, serving two terms as president.

James Lloyd Standley was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister a one brother.

Sister-in-law: Hazel Hall -Fort Scott, KS
Brother-in-law: Lawrence Branstetter - Fort Scott, KS

Memorial may be given to Hastings College

VISITATION:
Wed. 8-20-03; Noon-9pm
Thur. 8-21-03; 9am until service time
