Jay was born February 17, 1959 in Hastings, Nebraska to Bernard "Bud" Dale & Betty Jean (Carmichael) Hamburger. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1977. Having been companions since 1980, Jay married Karen Hemberger on October 28, 2005.
In the summer of 2000, Jay found the site of a mammoth eroding out of the banks at Medicine Creek Dam. Due to the friendship with archeologists at UNL the mammoth was excavated in 2000 and 2001. The site was named Hamburger Mammoth in his honor. He learned his craft of heavy machine mechanics from his mentors, Ed and Lester Hemberger. They gave him the love of work on vintage cars. Jay worked for the family business, Carmichael Construction, for 40 years and some of his job sites included Chief Ethanol; Hastings College, Bronze Bronco, Gray Center, and Sachtleben Observatory; and Mary Lanning Hospital.
Jay was preceded in death by his parents.
