Jasper Newell

Hastings resident Jasper J. Newell, 92, passed away Saturday, April 14, 2018, surrounded by family.

Jasper was born January 17, 1926, in Damar, KS to George & Alma (Brin) Newell. After he graduated from high school, Jasper served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Jasper married Phyllis N. Miller on August 27, 1951; she preceded him in death on July 16, 2015.

Jasper was a sheet metal worker for Hastings Equity Manufacturing Company and was a member of St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church. He was a lifetime member of Knights of Columbus and was a Scout Master. Jasper enjoyed square dancing, playing cards, and being the “jelly bean grandpa.” He loved to fish and be outside. Jasper’s favorite gift for all occasions was “pleasure of your company”.

Rosary is 7 p.m. Thursday, April 19, at Butler Volland Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial is 10 a.m. Friday, April 20, at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Hastings with Father Joseph M. Walsh officiating. Burial with military rites by Hastings Veterans Organizations will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Memorials may be given to St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church, School Sisters of Christ the King, or to the family. Visitation is 9-7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, and one hour prior to service at the church.

Jasper was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Phyllis N. Newell; son-in-law, Charles Mullin; and sister, Evangeline LaBarge.
