Hastings resident, Jean Harriett Toon, 86, passed away Tuesday, October 11, 2016 at College View Assisted Living & Memory Support, Hastings, Nebraska.
Services will be Friday, October 14, 2016; 10:30 A.M. at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 2810 West 7th Street, Hastings with Chaplain Damen Heitmann officiating. Private family burial will be held in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings. Memorials may be given to Women's Fellowship First Congregational United Church of Christ, 2810 West 7th Street or PEO Program for Continuing Education, creating opportunities for higher education for women (checks to Chapter DA PEO, Hastings NE.) There will be no viewing or visitation.
She was born on April 17, 1930 to Gerald and Louise Wadsworth in Des Moines, IA. Jean graduated from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines in 1948 and began her college education at Cottey College in Nevada, Mo. In 1949 she married her best friend and the love of her life, John Toon. She later continued her education graduating from Hastings College in 1983 earning a degree in Psychology.
Jean retired in 1993 as the Assistant Director of the Midland Area Agency on Aging where she was active in the establishment of Hastings Respite Care and was a member of the Adams County Senior Services Board. She served on the Hastings Family Planning Board and the advisory board for Opportunity House. She was employed for 10 years at the South Central Community Mental Health Center as Coordinator of Consultation and Education and early in her career worked at the Hastings Regional Center as a Community Pastoral Assistant.
She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, P.E.O. Chapter DA and enjoyed many other community and social organizations and volunteer positions. In 1988 she was awarded the Bill Sole Award for her service to the community.
Jean treasured family times. She enjoyed vacations, traveling in the VW bus, camping and backpacking in the National Parks throughout the western U.S. and Canada. She was adored by her family and attended as many sporting events, musical programs and activities involving her children and grandchildren that she possibly could. She valued her many friends and colleagues. The family would like to thank the staff at College View Assisted Living who provided loving care during the last four years of her life.
Jean is survived by her sister- in-law, JoAnn Magistad of Santa Barbara, CA, her daughters Marcy Toon Ruona of Clovis, CA, Jocelyn Toon Johnson and Greg Koester of Gibbon, NE, and sons and daughters-in-law, Brian Toon and Nancy Hirata of Eugene, OR, James and Janet Toon of Portland, OR and son-in-law Terence and Joan Foote of Lincoln, NE.
Her Grandchildren and their spouses are Donovan and Dana Foote, Meghan and Dave Boyer, Marcy and James Sorgenfrei, Brett and Brad Bailey, Ross and Andrea Ruona, Curtis and Stacey Johnson, Casey Johnson and Alex Johnson. Great Grandchildren are Kristin and Katelyn Foote, Jackson and Graham Boyer, Avery, Lily and Grayson Sorgenfrei, two nieces and one nephew.
She was preceded in death by her husband John W. Toon, daughter Janel Toon Foote, son Cornell Joseph Toon, son-in-law Gregg Johnson, and great grandson T.J. Foote.
