Jessie Miller

December 10, 1917 — May 5, 2015

Hastings resident, Jessie Lois (Thorlton) Miller, beloved mother of John Robert (Ana), James William (Sue) and Jodie Ann (Mike) peacefully passed away on May 5, 2015 at her home surrounded by family and friends.

Memorials may be given to the Jessie Lois Miller Memorial Fund. There will be no viewing or visitation.

Jessie was born on December 10, 1917 in Superior, Nebraska to Lena Elizabeth and Walter James Thorlton. She graduated from Chappell High School and married John J. Miller of Oshkosh on January 30, 1938.They were married in Montana where John was serving in the Army, moving to Sidney, Nebraska in service and then back to Oshkosh the home of the Robinson-Miller family for generations. In Oshkosh they built and ran Miller's Super Market and 5J Quarter Horses until John's death June 1, 1991. Jessie was a very vibrant part of Oshkosh during her life, serving as School Board President, PTA Head, and Worthy Matron in Eastern Star, Guardian of Job's Daughters, Boy Scout Den Mother, Girl Scout Leader, Election Board, Chamber of Commerce, Church Council and continuous volunteer, and a member of United Methodist Church. She worked side by side with her husband in the grocery and the horse business. Jessie moved to Hastings, Nebraska in 1998 where she was very active in the First United Methodist Church, a volunteer at Mary Lanning Hospital, a mentor in the school system and a very active bridge player. She was named a "Point of Light" for all of her volunteerism, President Bush's Program for Volunteers and an Ageless Hero by Blue Cross and Blue Shield in celebration of the spirit and vitality of US Seniors, serving as an inspiration to all her knew her. Throughout her life Jessie was first and foremost a wonderful mother and wife and a giving friend. She was a very faithful person and helped guide many young people to faith. Jessie was a force of nature in style, personality, humor and grace.

A celebration of her life will take place on Saturday, August 8, 2015 in Oshkosh, Nebraska, with interment in the Oshkosh Cemetery.
