Former Trumbull resident, John L. Black, 92, passed away Friday, September 14, 2012 at Grand Island Veterans Home, Grand Island, Nebraska.
Services will be Tuesday, September 18, 2012; 10:00 A.M. at Butler Volland Chapel, Hastings with Pastor Daniel Bremer officiating. Burial with military rites by Hastings Veterans Organizations will be in Inland Cemetery, Inland, Nebraska. Visitation will be Monday, September 17, 2012; 9:00 A.M. - 9:00 P.M. and one hour prior to service at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to Trumbull Rural Volunteer Fire Department or Trumbull Community Foundation.
John was born April 6, 1920 in Baltimore, Maryland to James G. & Bertha (Merryman) Black. He served with the U.S. Army Air Corps in Guam during World War II from December 31, 1941 until January 5, 1946. John married Eva J. Sheets on January 25, 1946 in Hastings; she preceded him in death on August 5, 1997. He was a self-employed mechanic and owned and operated Black's Repair in Trumbull, Nebraska. John was a past member of Trumbull United Methodist Church, member of Trumbull Volunteer Fire Department where he was Fire Chief, and was chairman of the Village Board in Trumbull for many years. He received his GED at age 70, an accomplishment he was very proud of.
John was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Eva J. Black; one brother, Roy Black; and one sister, Irene Hopkins.
