John Marvel

Hastings resident, John N. Marvel, 75, of 1380 East 12th Street, died Friday, August 22, 2008 at his home.

Jack was born April 27, 1933 in Hastings, Nebraska to Archie and Elizabeth (Newell) Marvel. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1951, earned his B.A. from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln in 1955, and graduated from the University of Nebraska Law School in 1957. On June 14, 1954, he married Alice Hansen. Jack was a loving and generous husband and father, devoting much of his life to his family. He practiced law until his retirement in 1995.

He was a 50 year member of the First Presbyterian Church and a past member of the Hastings Public School Board. Jack was an avid bridge player and storyteller. He also enjoyed tennis, reading, and political discussions.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Richard and Robert Marvel, and one sister, Marilyn Shafernich. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Alice. Survivors include daughter and grandson, Lisa Marvel, Salida, CO and Michael Dunlap, Lincoln, NE; daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Joachim Wunderlich, Hastings; son, Steven Marvel, Hastings; son and daughter-in-law, David and Robin Marvel, Wyoming, MN. He is also survived by sister-in-law, Oline Marvel, brother-in-law, Alex Shafernich, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

A private family service and interment will be held with no visitation or viewing. Memorials may be given to Hastings College, First Presbyterian Church or Hastings Greenscape. Livingston-Butler-Volland Funeral Home & Cremation Center is in charge of arrangements.
