Hastings resident, John J. Masek, 78, of 1214 University Street, died Wednesday, March 28, 2007 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.
A celebration of John's life will be held at a later date. He was cremated. A memorial has been established.
Mr. Masek was born to John & Rosa Masek on December 18, 1928 in Ulysses, Nebraska. He graduated from Ulysses High School and served in the United States Marine Corps, during the Korean War, from October 6, 1948 until August 29, 1952, earning the status of Staff Sergeant. He married Madalene (Davidson) Kennington on November 21, 1951 in Hastings and she preceded him in death on April 7, 1998. Mr. Masek worked in construction from 1952 until 1957. From 1957 until 1963, John was employed in various wholesale and retail businesses. However, the major portion of his working career began in February of 1963, where he was employed at Western Land Roller as superintendent of the mixer division and later retired as Manager of Plant Improvement in 1979. He then worked for the United States Postal Service in Hastings as maintenance manager from 1980 until his retirement in 1990. After retirement, John was caretaker at Dyer Park for several years. Hobbies included, The Four Rivers Sportsman Club, Central Nebraska Gem & Mineral Club, and a local CB Club. John enjoyed photographing nature. His greatest life accomplishment was accepting Jesus Christ as his Lord & Savior.
Mr. Masek was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Madalene, 2 brothers, Fred & Martin Masek, 1 sister, Agnes Masek and a grandson, Joey Patterson.
