John Toon

Hastings resident, John Willis Toon, 85, passed away Friday, April 20, 2012 at his home.

Memorial services will be Monday, April 30, 2012; 2:00 P.M. at First Congregational United Church of Christ, Hastings with Pastor Barry Rempp officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be given to Meals on Wheels, 305 N. Hastings Avenue, Hastings, Nebraska 68901.

On Friday, April 20, 2012, John Willis Toon passed away peacefully at home with his family gathered. Born to Parke and Ethel Toon of Des, Moines, Iowa on February 11, 1927, John graduated from Roosevelt High School before enlisting in the Navy in 1944. After serving for two years, he returned home to Iowa to attend Drake University. In 1949, he married the love of his life, Jean Harriet Wadsworth also of Des Moines, IA. After college, John went to work for Williams Bros. Pipeline where he was employed as a Terminal Operator, transferring from Des Moines to Fargo ND and then to Hastings in 1959. He retired in 1992. John was a member of the Mid West Lodge No. 317 becoming a 32nd degree Scottish Rites Mason in 1982. With his sons, he was active in Boy Scouts Troop 200. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Hastings where he served as a Deacon. For the past 18 years, he enjoyed volunteering to deliver meals for Meals on Wheels. An avid, life-long golfer, John joined Lochland Country Club in 1974, where he once hit a hole-in-one on the eighth hole. He was an enthusiastic angler, hunter and backpacker. Some of his family's fondest memories are of summer vacations touring the National Parks in their Volkswagen van. Above all else, John treasured his family, friends and neighbors and his kind and loving spirit will be dearly missed.

John was preceded in death by his brother, Jerry Toon; son, Cornell Joseph Toon; son-in-law, Gregg Johnson; daughter, Janel Toon Foote; and great-grandson, T.J. Foote.
