Hastings resident John I. Van Skiver, 74, passed away Wednesday, July 11, 2018, at Blue Hill Care Center, Blue Hill, NE.
Memorial Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 19, at Butler Volland Chapel in Hastings with Pastor Jerry Heydenberk officiating. Private family burial will be held at a later date. Memorials may be given to John I. Van Skiver Memorial Fund. There will be no viewing or visitation.
John was born in Pealo, CO to Dr. John & Pearl (Asmus) Van Skiver on November 18, 1943. The Van Skiver family moved to Grand Island, NE when John, Jr. was six months old. John attended school in Grand Island and graduated from Grand Island Senior High. He graduated from Milford Technical College with a degree in architectural drafting.
In 1963, John and his mother moved to Hastings, NE. Harold Johnson hired him to be a draftsman for Johnson Imperial Home Company. John eventually became manager of Johnson Imperial Company. In the summer of 1966, Harold arranged for his daughter, Bonnie to work in the drafting department. John and Bonnie were married June 2, 1967. They always said Harold “arranged” their marriage. John moved to Johnson Cashway Lumber when Harold retired and became President of Johnson Cash-Way Lumber Company of Hastings and Grand Island.
John’s greatest passion was his love of cars. A friend once told him “If it was shiny and black, we knew it was Van Skiver!”
John’s greatest enjoyment came from watching his two sons, Todd and Greg participate in sports and school activities. In recent years, he loved to watch his six grandchildren in all their activities.
