Hastings resident, Joseph R. Skalka, 83, died Thursday, October 2, 2008 at Harvard Rest Haven, Harvard, Nebraska.
A private family service is planned. The body was donated to The Anatomical Board of Nebraska.
Mr. Skalka was born October 28, 1924 in Deweese, Nebraska to Rudolph F. & Rosie V. (Karmazin) Skalka. After graduating from the Deweese High School he farmed with his dad until he was drafted into the United States Army. He served his country during the Korean War. Joe married Norma Lemke on September 9, 1947 at St. Stephen's Catholic Church, Lawrence, Nebraska. He farmed in the Deweese area until his retirement in 1987. He moved to Hastings and worked as a switchboard operator at the Hastings Regional Center for 8 years. Joe enjoyed his family, piloting his airplane, swimming at the YMCA, and having coffee with his friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
