Julia Diehm

July 20, 1902 — December 25, 2002

Former Hastings resident, Julia E. Diehm, 100, of Blue Hill Care Center, Blue Hill, Nebraska, died Wednesday, December 25, 2002 at Blue Hill Care Center.

Memorial service will be Friday, January 3, 2003; 10:00 A.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel with Dr. Sam Rathod officiating. Private family Interment will be in Sterling Cemetery, Sterling, Nebraska.

Julia E. Diehm, daughter of Ferdinand and Anna (Flegler) Diehm, was born July 20, 1902 on her parents' farm south of Adams, Gage County, Nebraska. Her parents emigrated from Germany in the early 1880's. For several years, they lived with friends in the Hopewell Community, Johnson County, Nebraska. In 1891, they bought a farm in nearby Gage county. Julia and her siblings were all born on this farm. In 1905, the family moved to a farm in Johnson County near the town of Crab Orchard. In 1918, her father gave up farming and the family moved to a house in Sterling, Nebraska. Julia graduated from Sterling High School, Sterling, Nebraska and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Peru State College, Peru, Nebraska. She continued her education at the College of Education in Evanston, Illinois, University of Colorado at Boulder and Colorado State College in Greeley, Colorado. Julia's teaching career began in her hometown of Sterling, Nebraska and she was with the Columbus schools for a number of years. She moved from Columbus, Nebraska to Hastings, Nebraska in 1945 and lived with her sister, Selma until Selma's death on July, 14, 2001. She was a third grade teacher at Longfellow Elementary School for 24 years. She was a member of Kappa Delta Pi, the Department of Classroom Teachers, held a life membership in the PTA, the Hastings Retired Teachers Association, the National Education Association and a life member of the Nebraska Educational Association. Julia united with the Methodist Church, of which she remained a loyal and devout member. Since moving to Hastings, she has been a member of the First United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. Julia was also a member of the YWCA in Hastings.

Julia E. Diehm was preceded in death by her parents, 2 sisters, Selma J. Diehm and Mrs. Robert Hillman, 2 brothers, Gus & Paul.
