Kathleen Deveny

Hastings resident, Kathleen Ann (Katie) Deveny, 60, passed away Saturday, July 16, 2016 at her home.

Rosary will be Thursday, July 21, 2016; 7:00 P.M. at Butler Volland Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, July 22, 2016; 10:00 A.M. at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church, Hastings with Father Joseph M. Walsh officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Start Over Rover. There will be no viewing or visitation.

Katie was born October 13, 1955 in Hastings to Jack & Ruth (Bonahoom) Deveny. She graduated from St. Cecilia High School in 1974 and the University of Nebraska in 1978.

When Katie was younger, she was an exceptional athlete. The high point of her high school career came during the 1974 Nebraska Girl's Track State Championship. Katie ran the leadoff leg for the 880 yard relay that won the gold medal and set a new national girls high school record at the same time. While at the University of Nebraska, she competed on the bowling team and placed in the Big 8 Conference Tournament. She continued to bowl when she returned to Hastings after graduation. Several times over the years, she had either the week's high game, high series or both in her league. Her highest single game score was 259.

When Katie was young, she had a way of making friends with older people. One of those people, Mrs. Kathleen Wright, was instrumental in Katie starting her business, "Katie's Nearly Nu Shop." Mrs. Wright taught Katie how to buy and sell used merchandise using "Party Line." Katie enjoyed it so much that she opened her shop and ran it nearly 25 years before declining health forced her to retire. Katie loved her shop because it allowed her to meet interesting new people and sell merchandise she had purchased and improved.

The family would like to recognize and thank Jo & Jim Kruml and Betty & Gary Aadland for the help & kindness they extended to Katie and Dr. Richard French provided exceptional medical care.

Katie was preceded in death by her mother, Ruth Deveny.
