Former Hastings resident Leon D. Meyer, 87, of Green Valley, AZ, passed away on May 27, 2018, in his home.
A celebration of life was held at Desert Hills Lutheran Church in Green Valley, AZ on June 9. Memorial Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 16, at Faith Lutheran Church in Hastings with Pastor Paul Dunbar officiating. Burial with military rites by Hastings Veterans Organizations will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Faith Lutheran Church, Hastings Food Bank, or given to the family for a memorial to be established at a later date.
He was born February 8, 1931, to Herman and Florence (Koch) Meyer in Campbell, NE. Leon was one of 13 children.
After graduating from Campbell High School in 1948, he joined the U.S. Army and was a hospital corpsman in Japan during the Korean conflict. In 1952, Leon began a 40-year career as a railroad switchman, brakeman, and conductor. He spent eight years with the Union Pacific and 32 years with the Burlington/Santa Fe.
In 1956 Leon married Marilyn Kuhlman of Campbell and on April 29th they celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary. They had two children, Jeffrey and Susan. They moved to Hastings, NE in 1960. In 2010, they became full-time residents of Green Valley, AZ.
Music was always a part of Leon's life. He sang in the church choir, a men's barbershop group, the "Chorus of the Plains" and in the Green Valley Men's Chorus.
One of Leon's pastimes was working on, repairing and building bicycles for his family as well as the neighborhood children. Leon belonged to the Elks, the VFW, the Optimists and the American Legion. He was also an active member of Faith Lutheran Church.
Leon is preceded in death by siblings, Doyt Meyer and Marvin Meyer; brothers-in-law, Roger Larson, Alan Anderson, Charles Eiseman, and Ray Grams; and sister-in-law, Maude Meyer.
