LeRoy Huston

November 19, 1916 — July 9, 2001

LeRoy Mitchel Huston, 84, of 716 Circle B, Hastings, Nebraska, died Wednesday, May 9, 2001 at Nebraska Veterans Home, Grand Island, Nebraska.

Services will be Saturday, May 12, 10:00 A.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel with Rev. Steve Hodgsen officiating. Burial with military rites will be in East Lawn Cemetery, Bladen, Nebraska.

LeRoy Mitchel Huston was born November 19, 1916 in Brandon, Colorado to David & Myrtle (McPherson) Huston. He attended Brandon High School, graduating in 1935. He was an air craft mechanic in the United States Air Force from November 17, 1939 until his retirement on November 30, 1959. His first service was with the Fourth Reconnaissance Squadron, Hicken Field, Hawaii. In September 1941,Sergeant Huston was transferred to Clark Field, Philippines Islands. At the time of Pearl Harbor Attack, December 7, 1941, he and others were air-lifted to Australia, where he served with the famed 19th Bombardment Group, as flight chief during its campaign in the Philippines, Australia and Java. LeRoy was stationed at Harvard Air Force Base, Nebraska in 1943 and 1944 working on the B29 Bombers. On September 16, 1944, he married Erma Meyer of Bladen, Nebraska in Hastings, Nebraska. He was assigned to Lowery A.F.B in Colorado in 1946. In 1950, he was assigned to the 394th Group Carrier Wing in Japan as an air-craft inspector, making trips to Korea for the next two years during the Korean War. After returning to the states, he held several positions at Hill Air Force Base, Utah and Lowery Air Base, Colorado, before being assigned to Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada until his 20 retirement in November of 1959. Some of Sgt Huston's awards and decorations include, American Defense Service Medal with Foreign Service Clasp; American Campaign Medal; Asian Pacific Campaign Medal with one Silver Service Star; WWII Victory Medal, Bronze Service Stars, Korean Service Medal with one Silver and two Bronze Stars; Air Force Longevity Service Awards with four Oak Leaf Clusters, Philippine Defense Service Ribbon From Philippine Independence Ribbons and Distinguished Unit Citation with Six Oak Leaf Clusters. After his military retirement, LeRoy and Erma and Children Janice & James lived in Red Cloud and Minden, where he worked as an auto mechanic for Baur Motors for 15 years prior to his civil retirement. They moved to Hastings, Nebraska in 1985. He was a member of Berean Church, V.F.W., American Legion Post #0011, TREA-The Retired Enlisted Association, NAUA-National Services of Uniformed Services, 19th Bombardment Association and the Kyusher Gypsy his squadron in Korean).

LeRoy M. Huston was preceded in death by his parents, 3 and 2 brother.
