Leslie Hamburger

February 15, 1939 — August 22, 2016

Hastings resident, Leslie I. "Red" "Les" Hamburger, 77, passed away Monday, August 22, 2016 at Mary Lanning Healthcare, Hastings, Nebraska.

Services will be Thursday, August 25, 2016; 2:30 P.M. at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hastings with Pastor Joel Remmers and Father Thomas Brouillette officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings. Memorials may be given to First St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Les Hamburger Memorial benefiting Hastings Public Schools and Hastings Catholic Schools, or the Trumbull Community Center. Visitation will be Wednesday, August 24, 2016; 9:00 A.M. - 8:00 P.M. with family present 5:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home, and one hour prior to service at the church.

Les was born February 15, 1939 in Clay Center, Nebraska to Leslie E. & Esther (Carlson) Hamburger. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1957, received his Bachelor's degree in Physical Education from University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1964. Les married Donna Hinrichs on November 24, 1963 at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hastings.

He taught one year at St. Patrick's Junior High in Lincoln and Hastings Public Schools from 1965 until 1998, and was a partner of C & H Detasseling for 40 years. Les coached youth baseball, basketball, and the Hastings Optimist Track Club. He was an assistant football coach, coached 9th grade boy'sbasketball, and was the head girls track coach at Hastings High School.

Les was a member of First St. Paul's Lutheran Church where he served on the church council and was an usher. He was also a member of Hastings Education Association, Nebraska Education Association, National Education Association, and Nebraska Coaches Association. The most important things in Les's life were his faith, family, and building relationships with others.

Les was preceded in death by his parents and brother, John Hamburger.
