Hastings resident Lois Andrea (Matzen) Hahne, 82, passed away Wednesday, April 17, 2019, at University of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, NE surrounded by all her family.
Service is 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 24, at First Presbyterian Church in Hastings with Rev. Greg Allen-Pickett officiating. Burial will be at Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation will be 1-8 p.m. Tuesday with the family present 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home, and one hour prior to service at the church. Memorials may be given to First Presbyterian Church.
Lois was born July 19, 1936, in Columbus, NE. She was the second of four children born to Maurice Theodore Matzen and Freda Andreason Matzen. Lois grew up on a farm outside of St. Edward, NE. She graduated from St. Edward High School. Lois moved to Hastings, where she graduated from Hastings College with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Lois received her Registered Nurse degree from Mary Lanning Memorial School of Nursing.
Lois moved to Denver, CO to begin her first job at The National Jewish Hospital of Denver. However, her farm girl heart was in Nebraska. She returned to Hastings and began a 36-year career with the State of Nebraska, at the Hastings Regional Center. She began her profession as a ward nurse and then spent 15 years as an instructor in Nursing Education. She finished her career as the supervisor of the Drug and Alcohol Detox unit.
While at the Hastings Regional Center, she met the love of her life, James Dale Hahne, who had just returned from the Navy. Lois and Jim were married on April 15, 1961, in St. Edward, at the St. Edward United Presbyterian Church. Thus began their 58-year love story. In marriage, they worked hard, loved God and family first, and raised four children, they retired, traveled the world, volunteered, and enjoyed family time with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. They always gave more than they took.
Lois was a giving person with a servant’s heart. She could never say no to anyone seeking a volunteer. Over the years she worked full-time while raising four children who were involved in multiple sports, music, scouts, 4-H, church and many extra-curricular activities. She never missed a wrestling match, swim meet, track meet, a play, a concert, a parent-teacher conference, a football game, a baseball game, leading a boy scout meeting, a girl scout cookie sale, a county fair, or any of the never-ending fundraisers. Lois was everything to everybody, every day.
Lois was a longtime faithful member of First Presbyterian Church, where she obtained an Honorary Life Membership in the Presbyterian Women of the Presbyterian Church. She participated in women’s Bible study and sang in the choir. She volunteered in the church office, prepared communions, and served years of Lunch on the Run meals to high school students.
Lois was also a member of and the musician for the BPOE Does Drove #112. For many years, she volunteered at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, the Mary Lanning Health Fair, and the Red Cross Blood Mobile.
Lois was a member of the Melon Roasters Classic Car Club. She enjoyed riding shotgun in their 1955 Chevy to car shows, and on the annual Tour Nebraska stops.
