Louis Enquist

Hastings resident, Louis "Lou" Jerome Enquist, 85, passed away Sunday, November 10, 2013 at Perkins Pavilion Good Samaritan Society-Hastings Village, Hastings, Nebraska.

Services will be Wednesday, November 13, 2013; 10:00 A.M. at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hastings with Pastor Joel Remmers and Pastor Dale Phillips officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul's Lutheran Churchyard Cemetery, west of Glenvil, Nebraska. Memorials may be given to the Hastings Food Pantry. Visitation will be Tuesday, November 12, 2013; 3:00 P.M. - 9:00 P.M. with family present 6:30 P.M. - 7:30 P.M. at the funeral home, and one hour prior to service at the church.

Mr. Enquist was born February 12, 1928 to Edwin Carl & Anna Olivia (Johnson) Enquist in a farm home in Phelps County, Nebraska. He attended Rural District #4 School in Williamsburg Township, Phelps County and graduated from Elm Creek High School in Elm Creek, Nebraska. He then farmed with his father for the next ten years. He served in the U.S. Army from February 6, 1951 to February 6, 1959. During his military service, he served two years with the seventh Army as a border guard in Bad Kissington, Germany during the Cold War. He was honorably discharged for time served. On July 19, 1958 he married Billie Gordon in Christ the King Chapel of the Lutheran Medical Center School of Nursing in St. Louis, Missouri and later moved to Hastings, Nebraska. To this union was born one daughter, Linda (Enquist) Colburn. He was employed in manufacturing and retired from Dana Corporation in 1994. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church west of Glenvil, Nebraska where he was confirmed and baptized into the Lutheran faith. He served as an usher and on the Church Council as Secretary. He then joined First St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hastings, Nebraska serving as an usher, greeter, and also as a Steward of Finance for a period of 20+ years. He was a member of the Fraternal Orders of the Eagles, Masonic Lodge #50, Fraternal Order of the Elks, and the American Legion. He was a past member of Southern Hills Country Club and the Elk's Country Club, and loved playing golf. He also loved to garden and liked to share his bounty with his neighbors. He was a Go Big Red Husker fan and spent summer family vacations at Bella Vista, Arkansas. With all these that he enjoyed, for him it was always God first and family second. While living in Goldbeck Towers at the Good Samaritan Village he served on the Congregate Meals Site Council. He volunteered at the library and also Perkins Pavilion Nursing Home helping the residents with TV bingo. He and his wife also started evening bingo for the residents in The Village Assisted Living. He received the President's Volunteer Service Award.

Lou was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; brother; and sisters.
