Marcella Lucille Vontz was born in Hastings, NE on June 2, 1924, to Frank and Lucille Pavelka. She was the granddaughter of Annie Pavelka who was fictionalized in Willa Cather's novel My Antonia.
Marcie was a loving, kind and faith-filled mother, grandmother, sister, mother-in-law, and friend. After graduating from Pauline, Nebraska High School, she worked at several businesses in Hastings and the family construction business for approximately 28 years while raising her family. In addition, she served as an election volunteer for many years. Marcie enjoyed playing bridge and golf, was passionate about the Cornhuskers and had a wardrobe of red clothes to prove it. A visit to her house usually included homemade cookies, a slice of pie, a kolache, or if you were really lucky an incredibly good cinnamon roll. That one recipe alone qualifies her for sainthood.
As a longtime member of St. Cecilia's Parish, she volunteered in many capacitiesa"at the grade school and high school, in the Altar Society, the Catholic Daughters, the Sodality, and on the Parish Council. Her Catholic faith was a source of strength and consolation in difficult times and shone through in her joyful encounters with friends and strangers. She always had a smile and a kind word for those she came in contact with and will be greatly missed. We wish to thank the 4th floor Critical Care staff and hospice nurses at Mary Lanning, especially Colleen and Tabitha and the staff at Edgewood Vista for their loving care during the past year.
She is survived by her children Gary (Bonnie), Daniel, Susan (Tim) and Bradley (Patty), nine grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren, and her sister, Wilma Jones.
