Margaret Hawthorne

Hastings resident, Margaret A. Hawthorne, 98, passed away Sunday, May 3, 2015 at Haven Home in Kenesaw, Nebraska.

Services will be held Wednesday, May 6, 2015; 2:00 P.M. at Butler Volland Chapel, Hastings with Pastor Travis King officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Trumbull, Nebraska. Memorials may be given to Trumbull Methodist Church or Trumbull Community Foundation. Visitation will be Tuesday, May 5, 2015; 1:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. with family present 6:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M., and one hour prior to service at the funeral home.

Margaret was born November 4, 1916 in Broken Bow, Nebraska to Ray & Dora Garton. She graduated from Broken Bow High School and attended Kearney State College. She married Elmo D. Hawthorne on July 28, 1940 in Trumbull, Nebraska; he preceded her in death on September 20, 1983. They raised three children: Maurice and twins, Dean and Eileen, on their farm near Trumbull. In 1954, with crops drying up, she went to work at the Hastings Chamber of Commerce where she was a secretary for Mr. Donovan. In 1958, she began working as the secretary for Mr. Watts at KHAS-TV. In 1966, she retired to become a grandma. She was a member of the Trumbull Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star #39, Daughters of the Nile #108, and Chapter FH, PEO. She was a church organist at Trumbull United Methodist Church and organist for Eastern Star and Daughters of the Nile for several years.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Elmo; brother, Crayton; granddaughter, Melissa Sue Way (January 8, 1970); and daughter-in-law, Judy Hawthorne (February 27, 2011).
