Marie Marcella Essen Hayes

Former Hastings resident Marie Marcella Essen Hayes, 97, passed away Sunday, October 22, 2023, at Azria Health, Blue Hill, NE.    

Memorial Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, October 30, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Hastings. Burial will be at Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. There will be no viewing or visitation. Memorials may be given to the family for a memorial to be established at a later date.

Marie was born on January 22, 1926, in Marshalltown, IA to Opal (Rash) Essen Leonard and Corwin Essen. She was a homemaker and a mother of 14 children, Sandra McMillan, Ginger Lighthill, Mike & Sandy McClure, Vickie Minzel, Sherry & Andy VanderSlice, Gene McClure, Linda Manzer, Sandy Hill, and Opal Veeder. She had numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Marie’s sisters were Myrna Huthmacher and Hellen Dutton, she was also an aunt to several nieces and nephews.

Marie was preceded in death by her Children: Larry Thorne, Dock McClure Jr, Lois McClure, Frank McClure, and Tom McClure; Parents: Opal Essen Leonard and Corwin Essen; Brothers: Howard Essen, Lester Leonard, Vern Leonard, and Don Leonard.
