Marie Maxine Osborn was born on February 10, 1924, at the family home in Haxtun, Colorado, to Max R. and Alma Meta (Draeger) Reiche. She was baptized on April 20, 1924, and confirmed on April 2, 1939, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Haxtun. The family moved to their homestead south of Haxtun when she was a small child. She attended Highland Center School until ninth grade. She graduated from Haxtun High School in 1942. Marie loved animals, especially horses and spent a lot of her time working in the outdoors and riding her favorite horses. In 1939, Marie and her father trail-herded cattle from the homestead to Otis, Colorado. Her father was a blacksmith and would often have to work at different locations, so she was in charge of the cattle alone. She often spoke of sleeping out with the cattle with her favorite horse. After high school she attended school in Omaha for the Union Pacific Railroad. She worked for the U.P. in Wyoming and Utah as a telegrapher, station agent, and interlocking signalman. On May 29, 1944, she married Robert E. Osborn in Denver, Colorado. They were married for 53 years. He precedes her in death. After WWII, the family moved near Sidney, Nebraska, until the Korean Conflict, when her husband was recalled to Naval service overseas. During that time they lived in and near San Diego, California. In 1952 she moved to Chappell and later Sidney, Nebraska. She was employed by the Sidney Public Schools for 20 years. After learning to swim as an adult Marie taught Red Cross swimming lessons for many years in Sidney. She truly loved teaching swimming and many benefited from her efforts. In 2000 Marie moved from Sidney to Hastings.
Marie is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a baby sister, brother Max Reiche, Jr., her older sisters Elsa Reiche and Norma Bailey.
