Hastings resident, Marilynn Jane Sachtleben, 70, passed away Thursday, September 17, 2009 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.
Celebration of life will be Tuesday, September 22, 2009; 10:00 A.M. at First Presbyterian Church, Hastings with Rev. Dr. William Nottage-Tacey officiating. A private family burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska. Memorials may be given to the Hastings College Sachtleben Observatory.
Marilynn was born October 30, 1938 to Helen M. (Ayres) and George Bedford in Seward, where she spent her childhood, graduating from Seward High School. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at Nebraska Wesleyan University where she was a member of Willard sorority and Cardinal Key honorary society. She later earned a Master of Arts degree at the University of Iowa.
She married Clyde Sachtleben June 15, 1958 in Seward. She taught high school music and business in Malcolm before moving to Hastings in 1960. She was a music teacher at Hastings Junior High School for several years, then joined the Hastings College staff as circulation supervisor in Perkins Library. She later served as executive director of the YWCA of Adams County. She was a sales associate at Gateway Realty for many years, and was an administrative assistant at the Hastings Community Foundation and continued as a member of the foundation's board of directors.
Marilynn was active in the First Presbyterian Church for many years, serving as a Trustee, Elder, Clerk of the Session and a member of many committees. She also served on the board of the denomination's Clark Jeary Retirement Community in Lincoln. A strong believer in giving back to the community, Marilynn enjoyed sharing her musical talent by playing the piano for many functions and entertaining at retirement homes. She also held leadership positions in many organizations and had been president of the American Association of University Women, Hastings College Faculty Wives, Hastings Symphony Board, Hastings Area United Way and Noon Rotary. She also served on the Hastings Board of Public Works, as well as the boards of Big Brothers Big Sisters, The Bridge, South Central Nebraska Children's Chorale, Leadership Hastings, and the Hastings Community Concert Association. Marilynn also was a frequent volunteer at the Crossroads Center.
Because many of Marilynn's most enjoyable times were spent sharing coffee and conversation with friends, she has asked that you honor her memory by taking a friend to coffee.
Marilynn was preceded in death by her parents.
