Former Hastings resident, Martha Marie Helzer, 56, of Wichita, Kansas, died Monday, April 6, 2009 in Wichita.
Rosary service will be Friday, April 10, 2009; 6:00 P.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel. Services will be Saturday, April 11, 2009; 10:00 A.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel with Father Joseph M. Walsh officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska. Visitation will be Friday, April 10, 2009; Noon-9:00 P.M. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Rose Hill Public Library, Rose Hill, Kansas, Wichita Humane Society or Hastings Public Library.
Ms. Helzer was born October 21, 1952 in Hastings, Nebraska to William & Elsie (Bednar) Helzer. She graduated from St. Cecilia's Catholic School in 1970 and from Hastings College in 1974. She moved to Natoma, Kansas after graduation and taught at Natoma Public Schools. She received her Master's Degree in Library Science from Emporia State University in 1977. Martha was a school librarian in Rose Hill Elementary School, Rose Hill, Kansas until her retirement in 2006. She was a member of Rose Hill Teachers Association in Kansas, Kansas National Education Association and National Education Association and Kansas Association of School Librarians.
Ms. Helzer was preceded in death by her father, William in 1989.
