Hastings resident, Mary Jean "Midge" Ewing, 81, passed away Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at her home.
Services will be Saturday, May 26, 2012; 10:00 A.M. at Butler Volland Chapel, Hastings, Nebraska with Pastor Tony Dawson officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska. Visitation will be Friday, May 25, 2012; 5:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. with family present 6:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be given to Lions Club Sight Conservation Fund.
Mary was born March 11, 1931 at Newport, Nebraska to Ike & Thelma (Keebaugh) Bailey. Mary grew up in the Newport and Bassett, Nebraska areas and was a 1948 graduate of Bassett High School. She worked for Dr. Harold J. Panzer for a couple of years in Bassett. She attended UNMC at Omaha and graduated in 1954 with a BS in Nursing and also received her RN. Mary Bailey married John H. Ewing June 6, 1954 at Omaha. Later that year they moved to Hastings. Mary worked at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital during the Polio outbreak for two years. She then worked for the surgery department for 13 years. She left work to raise her two children. Once her children were in school fulltime in 1972 she rejoined the surgery department at Mary Lanning and worked there for several years. Mary then worked at Hastings Orthopedics for 18 years as their head surgical RN before retiring. Mary was a member of First United Methodist Church in Hastings. She was a former Brownie and Cub Scout Pack Leader. She enjoyed reading, playing bridge and being a mother and grandmother.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; brother, John Bailey; sister, Laura Brogard; and two infant siblings, a baby boy and a baby girl.
