Hastings resident, Mathias "Matt" Pittz Jr., of College View Assisted Living & Memory Support, died Friday, October 19, 2012 at Mary Lanning HealthCare.
Rosary will be Tuesday, October 23, 2012; 7:00 P.M. at Butler Volland Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, October 24, 2012; 10:00 A. M. at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church with Father Joseph M. Walsh officiating. Burial with military rites by Hastings Veterans Organizations will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, October 23, 2012; 9 A.M. until 9 P.M. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Memorials may be given to St. Cecilia's Catholic Church.
Matt was born February 14, 1916 in rural Adams County to Mathias & Victoria (Bohr) Pittz Sr. Matt worked at the Hastings Naval Ammunition Depot and as a government inspector at the Grand Island Ordinance Plant. He also was a rural mail carrier on the Star Route until he retired in 1979. On July 7, 1941 he married Bessie Pittman and they were married 71 years this past July. He served in the Army during WWII from October 1941 until October 1945. Matt was in the Aleutian Islands and Okinawa where he was wounded and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a lifetime resident of Adams County, member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church and lifetime member of VFW Post #1346 in Hastings. Matt enjoyed his family, his dog Mitzie, woodworking and playing cards.
Matt was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers and 5 sisters.
