Maude Johnson

Hastings resident, Maude "Maudie" Edith Johnson, 85, passed away Monday, August 16, 2010 at College View Assisted Living, Hastings, Nebraska.

Services will be Thursday, August 19, 2010; 10:30 A.M. at Butler Volland Chapel, Hastings with Rev. Irving Jennings officiating. Burial will be Thursday, August 19, 2010; 3:00 P.M. in Arnold Cemetery, Arnold, Nebraska. Visitation will be Tuesday, August 17, 2010; 6:00 P.M. - 9:00 P.M., Wednesday, August 18, 2010; 1:00 P.M. - 9:00 P.M., and 1 hour prior to service at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the Arnold Baptist Church or the Arnold Cemetery Association.

Maudie was born August 4, 1925 in Arnold, Nebraska to Earl W. & Mary Ellen (Layton) Province. She grew up in Arnold and after moving with her family to Edmond, Oklahoma, she graduated from Edmond High School in 1944. After high school graduation, she taught at several one-room country schools in Custer and Lincoln counties. She also attended Kearney State Teacher's College. On July 17, 1950, she married Hans L. "JR" Johnson at Arnold. They lived and farmed near Stapleton, Nebraska until 1964. From there they moved several times over the course of owning businesses in Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Colorado. They moved back to Nebraska in 1978 where she was a realtor for the following 14 years. After retirement, she and JR moved to Juniata to be near their son Dan and his family. In 2003, they moved to Good Samaritan Village in Hastings. Her husband preceded her in death on October 12, 2004. She moved to College View Assisted Living in Hastings in March 2010. She was a 61 year member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Maudie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Hans L. "JR" Johnson; sister, Mary Phillips; and half-brother, Lewis Twist.
