Hastings resident, Melvin Burdette Swanson, 93, of The Kensington, 233 N. Hastings, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001 at Perkins Pavilion, Good Samaritan Village, Hastings, Nebraska.
Services will be Friday, March 30, 2001; 2:00 P.M. at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church with Pastor Kathleen Kasper officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.
Melvin B. Swanson was born March 25, 1908 in Ong, Nebraska to Henry G. & Mary (Nelson) Swanson. He was baptized in the Stockham Lutheran Church at Shickley, Nebraska on May 10, 1908 and was confirmed April 29, 1923 at the Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Ong, Nebraska. He graduated from Ong High School in 1926 and farmed until 1942 in the Ong-Edgar vicinity for twelve years. On September 17, 1942, he enlisted in the United States Navy and attended Store Keeper School in Toledo, Ohio, where he was rated third class Store Keeper, and assigned to the USS Windsor, spending a year in the Pacific. He was a member of the Navy Glee Club in Toledo, Ohio. He received the following awards: Asiatic Pacific Area, Philippines Liberation Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, American ARE, Point System and Victory Medal WWII. He was honorably discharged February 4, 1946 as Store Keeper First Class. On May 26, 1946, he married Seatta (Hornbacher) Wenz in Sutton, Nebraska and lived in Davenport, Nebraska where he was employed at Davenport Implement Company for nine and a half years. In 1955, they moved to Hastings, Nebraska for his employment with Fred Spady Motors for seven years, later he worked at the Big G General Supply for twelve years, retiring in 1974. In 1996, his health required him to live at The Kensington. In July of 2000, he moved to Perkins Pavilion where he lived until his death. He enjoyed his family and their annual gatherings in September, music, cards, visiting and life at The Kensington. He was an active member of First St. Paul's Lutheran Church, past member of Chorus of the Plains, sixteen year member of The Golden Age Entertainers Band of the Good Samaritan Village, playing drums, U.C.T, AARP, and American Legion as marker for the deceased Veterans Office.
Melvin B. Swanson was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, 1 brother, 4 sisters-in-law and 2 brothers-in-law.
