Ayr resident, Menno John Schmidt, 93, passed away Monday, June 21, 2010 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital, Hastings, Nebraska.
Services will be Thursday, June 24, 2010; 2:00 P.M. at Hanover Presbyterian Church, Glenvil with Rev. John H.G. Curtiss officiating. Burial will be in Hanover Presbyterian Churchyard Cemetery, Glenvil, Nebraska. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 23, 2010; 9:00 A.M. - 9:00 P.M. with family present from 6:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home, and 1 hour prior to service at the church. Memorials may be given to the family to be gifted to Hanover Presbyterian Church or Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital Hospice.
Menno was born April 12, 1917 in Loga, Ostfriesland, Germany to Gerd & Minna (Voget) Schmidt. He was baptized on May 5, 1917 at the Lutheran Church in Loga, Germany. On November 27, 1955 he married Erma Fredricks in Glenvil, Nebraska. She preceded him in death on July 12, 2009. He was a lifelong farmer in the area. He was a member of the Hanover Presbyterian Church where he was an Elder and Deacon. He was also a member of the Ayr Volunteer Fire Department, Hanover School Board, and was a Hanover Township Board Member.
Menno was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Erma Schmidt; son, Keith Schmidt; great-grandson, Noah; brothers, George & Gerd; sister, Helen; and an infant sister.
