Merlin Meyer

January 17, 1925 — October 1, 2009

Hastings resident, Merlin V. "Benny" Meyer, 84, passed away Thursday, October 1, 2009 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Services will be Monday, October 5, 2009; 2:00 P.M. at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Hastings with Pastor Steven Peeler officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska. Visitation will be Saturday, October 3, 2009; 1:00 P.M. - 9:00 P.M.; Sunday, October 4, 2009; 1:00 P.M. - 9:00 P.M., with family present from 6:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M.; and 1 hour prior to service at the Church. Memorials may be given to Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd or Hastings Food Pantry.

Merlin was born January 17, 1925 in Coleridge, Nebraska to Bernhard & Gertrude (Eilert) Meyer. He graduated from High School, and attended Wayne State Teacher's College in Wayne, Nebraska for two years. On August 8, 1954, he married Golda Mae Stafford in Decatur, Nebraska. She preceded him in death on November 9, 1998. On September 28, 2001, he married Julane (Frahm) Kathman in Grand Island, Nebraska. He worked as a manager for Safeway throughout the state of Nebraska. He was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd and was very active in the church. He was a member of the American Legion in Hastings and was in the U.S. Army from May 26, 1943 to January 29, 1946. He operated a Roller Rink and was a very good roller-skater. He loved playing dominos, camping, and fishing. After his retirement, he volunteered at the Hastings Food Pantry and Meals On Wheels.

Merlin was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and son, Rodney Meyer.
