Merna Urwin

Hastings resident Merna (Steiner) Urwin, 65, loving wife, mother of two and grandmother of four, passed away Wednesday, November 20, 2019, from cancer peacefully at home surrounded by family.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 25, at Faith Lutheran Church in Hastings with Pastor Josh Davis officiating. Burial will be held at Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is 1-5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with the family present. Memorials may be given to the family for a memorial to be established at a later date to be distributed to Merna’s favorite charities.

Merna was born on February 22, 1954, in Hastings, NE to Harold & Margaret (Parmenter) Steiner. She graduated from Kenesaw High School in 1972. Merna married Dick Urwin on June 5, 1976. They raised their two children, son Chad Urwin and daughter Andrea (Urwin) Niemann.

December of 1989, Merna earned her Registered Nursing degree from the College of St.Mary’s. Merna dedicated her life to 40 years of nursing as an LPN and an RN at Mary Lanning Hospital. She also worked for five years as an Occupational Health Nurse at Armour Foods. She was well known for her quick thinking, but more importantly her compassion for the patient and their families. Her love for nursing gifted her with life long friendships and another family of nurses to carry the joys and hardships of the profession.

However, Merna’s greatest passion was being a truly dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother. Her family is truly blessed to have been encompassed by her overwhelming love and dedication. In 2004 her life changed when she received the title of grandmother. Her four grandchildren, Ragan, Bristol, Spencer, and Peytin, were given a friend, cheerleader, ally, and partner in crime. The family is beyond blessed to be given a lesson of laughing, living and loving through their toughest of times. She left an unimaginable example of bravery and courage to carry with them.

Merna was preceded in death by her grandparents.
