Michael A. "Mike" Gestring

A memorial service for Michael A. “Mike” Gestring, will be held on Tuesday, November 21, at 2 p.m. at Butler Volland Chapel in Hastings with Father Craig Clinch officiating.

Michael Allen Gestring, 71 years of age, of Hastings. NE passed away on November 15, 2023, at Mary Lanning Health Center in Hastings, NE surrounded by his loving family. Mike was born in Hastings on December 22, 1951, the second of four children, born to Jack and LaMars (Lemke) Gestring. He received his education from Blue Hill Community School and graduated with the class of 1970 where he set records for track and field. He was also a talented football player and played in the Shrine Bowl in 1970.

On May 1, 1982, he was united in marriage to Joan Gestring (Hilty) in Lexington, NE and they were blessed with two children, Erica and Olivia. He worked at Rounds and Porter and went on to own Robinson Motors, the Buick, Pontiac, and GMC dealership in Holdrege. For the last 18 years, he was employed as a truck driver for Crete Carrier Corporation and was fond of being on the road. Construction and trucking were both a big part of his life.

Mike enjoyed spending time at his motor garage which housed everything from his RV to his shuffleboard table. He was known for talking on the phone for hours and his family and close friends could always expect a phone call or two from him every week. Above all else, Mike adored being with his daughters and grandchildren.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and LaMars Gestring and a nephew, Matthew Hinrichs.

Mike leaves to celebrate his life: two children, Erica Sandell and her husband Chad of Omaha, NE and Olivia Oberg and her husband Kevin of Kearney, NE; three sisters, Cindy VanBoening and her husband Lonnie of Blue Hill, NE, Linda Parr of Hastings, NE, and Deb Hinrichs and her husband Steve of Fairfield, NE; three grandchildren, Vivian Sandell, Garrison Oberg, and Langston Oberg; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends, and his beloved dog, Mindy. 

There will be no visitation as the family is honoring Mike’s wish for cremation. There will not be a burial held at this time. Memorials may be given to the family for a memorial to be established at a later date. The service will be live-streamed on Livingston Butler Volland Funeral Home’s website.
