Hastings resident, Michele L. Nickel Northrop, 60, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, September 5, 2017, at her home of natural causes.
Memorial Mass will be Tuesday, September 12, 2017; 2:00 P.M. at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church, Hastings with Father Joseph M. Walsh officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Heartland Pet Connection, TeamMates Mentoring Program, or YWCA of Hastings. Book signing will be Monday, September 11, 2017; 9:00 A.M. a�" 5:00 P.M. at the funeral home, and one hour prior to service at the church.
Michele was born February 27, 1957, to Donald and Jeanette (Mathews) Nickel in Kearney, Nebraska.
Michele married John M. Northrop, August 20, 1983, in Estes Park, Colorado. The service was in Our Lady of the Mountains Church.
Michele graduated from Kearney State College and went on to the University of Nebraska where she received her Doctorate in Pharmacy. She was a pharmacist for many years at Mary Lanning Hospital. Michele was an adjunct professor of pharmacy for the University of Nebraska School of Pharmacy as well as Creighton University, from which she received a degree as a Certified Diabetic Educator.
Michele was the owner and President of Northrop Dog Training, LLC. Upon retirement, Michele became a 'professional' volunteer. She spent time at the Heartland Pet Connection, TeamMates Mentoring Program, Mary Lanning Hospice, Hastings Museum, Duck Days, Hastings YWCA, Nebraska Border Collie Rescue Group, Cottonwood Prairie Festival, Hastings Library, a 'Bell Ringer' for the Salvation Army at Christmas, and the American Heart Association.
Michele was a member of PEO, Chapter HT, Hastings Library Foundation Board, The Bridge, Nebraska Society of Hospital Pharmacists, serving as Program Chair in 1992, St. Cecilia's Church, appointed by Governor Johanans in 2002 to the 33rd District Judicial Nominating Commission-County Courts, and served as a Board Member of 'Friends of the Lied.'
Michele was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Michael; and sister, Kim.
