Murl Zimmerman

November 25, 1915 — October 13, 2009

Hastings resident, Murl M. Zimmerman, 93, passed away Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at her residence, 1205 E. 42nd Street, Hastings.

There will be no services or viewing as Murl was cremated. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be given to the family or Alzheimer's Association.

Murl was born November 25, 1915 to George S. & Nettie (Tunnison) Fogg. She graduated from Guide Rock High School and went on to graduate from beauty school in Hastings. She married Hastings businessman, Harry Graham in 1943. He always said, "She was the only woman I ever knew that had any brains..." Together they built over 150 homes in Hastings after the Korean War. Her most famous claim to fame (in the 1940's and 1950's) was a little ice cream/sandwich shop on the corner of 3rd and Burlington called the Iceberg. "Old timers" from the area remember their homemade ice cream and quart malts for a nickel! Also, their homemade pies and famous yum yums. In fact, just a year ago a former customer called wanting the recipe for those delicious yum yums! For over 50 years she owned and operated the Ideal Beauty Shop. The only way she ever "lost" a customer was when they died from old age. In 1954, her husband Harry died. For years she had apartment houses. Her renters became "extended family" and many times helped them with the rent or "forgave" the debt, buying Christmas presents for their kids and furnishing holiday dinners when they were struggling financially. She later remarried one of her high school classmates, John "Lloyd" Zimmerman of Guide Rock, he preceded her in death.

Many thanks, gratitude, and love go to her long time care-taker and friend, Shirley Skaggs. Thank you and much appreciation to all the nurses and staff from hospice.

Murl was preceded in death by her parents, 3 brothers, 1 sister, husbands Harry Graham and Lloyd Zimmerman, grandson Tracy Carey, step-children Donald Graham, Elmer Graham, Lester Graham, Clifford Graham, Robert Graham, Ruth Nelson, and Vera Foster.
