Paul Wathen

Hastings resident Paul E. Wathen, 90, passed away Wednesday, February 14, 2018, at Mary Lanning Healthcare, Hastings, NE.

Memorial Services are 2:00 p.m. Sunday, February 18, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Hastings with Pastor Robert Smith officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Hastings. Memorials may be given to Redeemer Lutheran Church. Book signing is Saturday, February 17; 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Paul was born September 21, 1927, on a farm near Oakland, IA to John & Pauline (Rounds) Wathen. After a short time, the family moved to St. Edward, NE when Paul was seven years old. He worked at the lumber yard in St. Edward. Paul lived in St. Edward until the war broke out in 1941. The family moved to Grand Island where he set bowling pins for a time at the bowling alley.

Paul went to work at the Naval Depot at the age of 16 and worked there until he was caught in the draft and went into the Army at the age of 18 and was stationed at Fort Lewis, WA until the draft ended. He returned to Hastings and finished school at Hastings High. He opened a café in Hastings from 1946 until 1949. Paul married Phyllis Juggert on February 3, 1951. He took a salesman job at Uerling Furniture in 1952 and that job lasted forty-one and one-half years. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Beverly Wetherbee; granddaughter, Misty Marie Wetherbee; great granddaughter, Kaelynn Marie Wathen; and siblings, Sharon, Eunice, and Leonard.
