Phyllis Leona Sprague Watts Goldsmith, 97, went to her Heavenly home Thursday, August 29, 2024, at Providence Memory Care in Hastings, NE. Alzheimer's may have stolen her memories but it never dampened her smile or her deep love of others.
Phyllis was born in Smith Center, KS on November 13, 1926, the first child of Dewey and Faye (Sealock) Sprague. She had three younger sisters, Patty Ann Sprague, Avis Lee Weltmer both of who preceded her in death, and Sharon Jo Sprague of Hastings, NE. She graduated from high school in Smith Center and married Mark Watts after graduation. Phyllis and Mark had three daughters Sandi, Connie, and Dee Anna. They raised their daughters in Newton, KS where Phyllis was a secretary for the Brotherhood of Maintenance Way Santa Fe Railroad. They divorced in 1970. Phyllis married Richard Goldsmith on June 9, 1984, in Newton, KS and they shared a wonderful life of traveling, gardening, and many charitable endeavors until his passing in 2017. Phyllis and Richard had moved to Green Valley, AZ where she got to spend time with her daughters, Sandi and Connie and her younger sister, Sharon as she worked tirelessly in her huge beautiful garden. Phyllis was well known for her gift of gardening and her skill as an artist.
Phyllis is survived by her children and stepchildren, Sandi and Bob Carnahan of Green Valley, AZ, Connie Watts Gulfport, FL, Dee Anna and Rick Piepho Newton, KS, stepchildren, Richard and Pat Goldsmith who preceded her in death, Joanna and Ron Miller of CO, Jim Goldsmith of TX. She will be deeply missed by her children, eight grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of her life will be planned at a later date. In lieu of flowers or cards, we will be establishing a memorial for Providence Memory Care.
