Raymond Mohrlang

August 20, 1922 — September 26, 2010

Hastings resident, Raymond G. Mohrlang, 87, of the Kensington, died Saturday, June 26, 2010, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Services will be Wednesday, June 30, 2010; 10:30 A.M. at Grace United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Lee R. Wigert officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings at 1:00 P.M. Visitation will be Monday, June 28, 2010; 5 P.M. - 9 P.M., Tuesday, June 29, 2010; 9 A.M. - 9 P.M. with family present from 6:30 P.M. - 8:30 P.M. at the funeral home and one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Grace United Methodist Church or Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Ray Mohrlang was born August 20, 1922 in Hastings, Nebraska to Conrad & Anna (Kistler) Mohrlang. He began his schooling in Trumbull and then moved to Hastings with his family when he was in grade school. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1939. He married Phyllis Richards on March 3, 1943. He served with the 2498th Quartermaster Truck Company from 1942 - 1945 during WWII in the U.S. Army. During his 40 year career Ray was a truck driver for Woods Truck Line, Buckingham Transportation, Hastings Transfer, Interstate Freight Line which merged with Bee Line and he retired in 1984. In 1977 he was the Nebraska Motor Carriers Driver of the Year. He was a member of the Whitespot Motorcycle Club before leaving for the army and he played on the Men's Softball League in Hastings during the early 1950's. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church where he ushered and enjoyed fellowship with church members. He volunteered at Perkins Pavilion for 14 years. Ray was a longtime member of the American Legion, V.F.W. and retired Teamsters. He enjoyed camping, fishing, garage sales and auctions. His family was very important to him and Ray especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Until recent years Ray always raised a well kept garden, he didn't eat vegetables, but he really liked to share what he grew. Ray was an avid newspaper reader and was known for cutting coupons or clippings that his family and friends would be interested in. Ray never met a stranger and always went out of his way to help others. Ray was known affectionately as the "Candy Man" and always had a Snickers or Butterfinger in his pocket to share.

Ray Mohrlang was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Archie Mohrlang, Harold Mohrlang, two sisters, Katherine Rutt, Alta Adams, infant daughter, Julie Rae Mohrlang and great-grand daughter, Megan Sue Vap.
