Long time Hastings jeweler, Richard John Hiber, 89, of 1524 Highland Dr., Hastings, Nebraska, died Saturday, November 9, 2002 at home.
Rosary service will be Monday, November 11, 2002; 7:30 P.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, November 12, 2002; 10:00 A.M. at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church with Father Larry Gyhra officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, all in Hastings, Nebraska.
Richard Hiber was born January 26, 1913 in O'Neill, Nebraska to John & Cora (Hutchinson) Hiber. His parents moved to Hastings when he was 10 years old and opened Hiber's Jewelry Store. He attended Hastings High School, Notre Dame University and graduated Hastings College in 1935. He worked for J.M. McDonald Company before servicing in the United States Army during WWII from January 28, 1942 to November 14, 1945. During the war, he served 3 ½ years with the 6th Infantry Division in the South Pacific, earning the Bronze Star. When he returned from the service, he joined his father in the jewelry store. He married Rita McGovern of Omaha on August 3, 1946. He was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church, an honorary member of the Crosier Apostolate, a member of the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree, the American Legion, VFW Post 1346, and Lochland Country Club. He was a former president of Meadowbrook Country Club.
Richard Hiber was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Marguerite Corrigan.
