Hastings resident, Richard F. Smith, 94, passed away Thursday, August 21, 2014 at Mary Lanning Healthcare, Hastings, Nebraska.
Memorial Services will be Saturday, August 23, 2014; 10:30 A.M. with family present at 9:30 A.M. at Butler Volland Chapel, Hastings with Rev. Dr. Lee R. Wigert officiating. Private burial will be held at a later date. There will be no viewing or visitation. Memorials may be given to the family for a memorial to be established at a later date.
Richard was born June 26, 1920 in Bushnell, Nebraska to Earl & Frances (Ferguson) Smith. He graduated from Bushnell High School. Richard moved to Hastings in 1940 and attended Nebraska College of Commerce. He served with the U.S. Army from January 7, 1942 until August 31, 1945, serving in Asiatic Pacific New Guinea. He was wounded in the service and awarded the Purple Heart, Distinguished Unit Badge, Good Conduct Medal, and Combat Infantry Badge. He married Dorothy L. Schlaphof on October 16, 1946 in Murdock, Nebraska. Richard worked for 30 years as a clerk for the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement in 1975. He moved to Sun City, Arizona in 1975 until 1995 when he moved back to Hastings. Richard was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Juniata United Methodist Church, and Disabled American Veterans.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents; 4 brothers; and 1 sister.
