Riley Smith

November 7, 1916 — March 23, 2002

Riley Howard Smith, 85, of 1235 N. Laird #106, died Wednesday, March 20, 2002 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Services will be Saturday, March 23, 2002; 10:00 A.M. at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Carl W. Utley, Rev. Matt Nieman and Rev. Blake Tiemann officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.

Riley Howard Smith was born November 7, 1916 in Glenvil, Nebraska. As a child, he lived with his parents, Roy & Ethel (Greenfield) Smith on a farm east of Hastings that later became part of the Naval Ammunition Depot. He moved to Hastings, Nebraska and graduated from Hastings High School in 1934. On November 29, 1940, he married Irva Bierhaus and began working for Dutton Lainson until 1948. From 1950 until 1960, they farmed east of Hastings where the current Co-op plants are located. They moved back into Hastings and owned Smith Insurance Agency from 1962 until his retirement in 1982. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he was a Deacon, Elder & Session member, Masonic Lodge 50, 32nd degree Scottish Rite, Tehama Temple, longtime Kiwanian and past president, Adams County Extension Service board member, Central NE Gun Club, NE State Trap Association and Holiday Rambler Club, State & National Clubs.

Riley Howard Smith was preceded in death by his parents.

Daughters: Gwen Tiemann - Papillion, NE
Deb Johnson - Hastings, NE
8 Grandchildren
4 Great Grandchildren
Brother: Charles A. Smith - Conway, AR
