Hastings resident, Robert J. "Jim" Gibbons, 96, of Perkins Pavilion, died Saturday, January 13, 2007 at Perkins Pavilion.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, January 18, 2007; 10:30 A.M. at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church with Father Larry Gyhra officiating. Burial with military rites will be January 18, 2007; 12:30 P.M. in Exeter Cemetery, Exeter, Nebraska with Father Stephen Cooney officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday, January 16, 2007; 5pm-9pm & Wednesday, January 17, 2007; 9am-9pm with family present from 6:30 pm-8:30 pm. at Butler-Volland Funeral Home & Thursday, January 18, 2007; 1 hr. prior to service at the church. Memorials to St. Cecilia's Catholic Church Renovation Fund or Hastings Catholic Schools Trust.
Mr. Gibbons was born July 2, 1910 in Exeter, Nebraska to John & Catherine (Morgan) Gibbons. He served in the United States Army during WWII from November 15, 1942 to November 19, 1945 earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was wounded on January 4, 1945 and received the Purple Heart. He also received the Good Conduct Medal & Combat Infantry Badge. After his discharge, he worked for Civil Service for 22 years at the Navy Ammunition Depot, Bureau of Reclamation, back to Navy Ammunition Depot, Sioux Ordinance, Sidney, Nebraska and at Mead, Nebraska Ammunition Depot.
Mr. Gibbons was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, John, Leo & William Gibbons, two sisters, Rose McShane & Jo Manning.
