Dr. Robert F. Gleckner, 76, of 11312 Hickory Grove Church Rd, Raleigh, North Carolina, died Tuesday morning, August 21, 2001, at his home.
Funeral services will be held Friday, August 24, 2001; 11:00 AM at Clements Funeral Chapel in Durham, North Carolina. Graveside service will be Tuesday, August 28, 2001; 10:00 A.M. at Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska with Dr. Carl W. Utley officiating.
Dr. Gleckner was born, March 2, 1925 in Rahway, New Jersey, the son of the late Frieda Froehlich and Adam Francis Gleckner. He attended P.S. 40 Elementary School and graduated from Curtis High School in Staten Island, New York. Dr. Gleckner received his B.A. degree in English from Williams College in 1948, graduating Magna Cum Laude. He received his Ph. D degree in 1954 from The Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Gleckner lived in Hastings, Nebraska while stationed at Harvard Air Base, serving in the U.S. Air Force from 1942 to 1945. On February 7, 1946, he married Glenda Karr in Hastings, Nebraska. Dr. Gleckner was a professor of English at the University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, Ohio from 1952-1954; University of Wisconsin, 1955-1958; Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan, 1958-1962; University of California, Riverside, 1962-1978; and Duke University, 1978-2001. Dr. Gleckner was honored as Faculty Research Lecturer at U.C. Riverside and was named Professor Emeritus by Duke University. Dr. Gleckner, who retired on July 1, 2001, was the author of several books on William Blake and Lord Byron as well as other romantic poets and authors. He was an honorary member of Hastings High School class of 1944.
