Hastings resident, Ruth L. Shaughnessy, 65, of 1331 Apache Avenue, died Monday, July 27, 2009 at her home.
Rosary will be Thursday, July 30, 2009; 7:30 P.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, July 31, 2009; 10:00 A.M. at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church with Father Joseph M. Walsh and Father Dennis Hanneman officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, all in Hastings, Nebraska. Book signing will be Wednesday, July 29, 2009; 5:00 P.M.-9:00 P.M., Thursday, July 30, 2009; 9:00 A.M.-9:00 P.M. with family present from 6:30 - 9:00 P.M. at the funeral home and Friday, July 31, 2009, 1 hour prior to service at the church. Memorials may be given to St. Cecilia's Catholic Church or the ALS Association.
Ruth was born April 14, 1944 the daughter of August and Lola (Rizer) Lindekugel in North Platte, Nebraska. She was raised on a farm near Hayes Center, Nebraska and graduated from Hayes Center High School. She attended the University of Nebraska-Kearney and earned a degree in secondary education in 1966. She began teaching English and French at Harvard High School. She married Francis Shaughnessy on June 1, 1968. She later taught at Trumbull High School from 1980-1998 and again at Harvard from 1998-2001. After retiring from teaching, she was a paraeducator at Morton Elementary School from 2001-2008. Ruth was a devoted wife to her husband of forty-one years and mother and grandmother to her children and grandchildren. She loved to play golf while able, play bridge and solve puzzles. In addition to her love of family, Ruth was a dedicated teacher and advocate of children. She is also remembered for making the best chocolate chip cookies in the world. She was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church, where she was a reader and a member of the evangelization committee.
Ruth was preceded in death by her mother and several aunts and uncles.
