Samuel Batty

Hastings resident, Samuel Batty, 82, passed away Friday, February 13, 2015, surrounded by his family at Mary Lanning Healthcare, Hastings.

Services will be Wednesday, February 18, 2015; 10:30 A.M. at First United Methodist Church with Pastor Greg Lindenberger officiating. Military rites will follow the church service, at the church by Hastings Veterans Organizations. Private burial will be at a later date. Memorials may be given to First United Methodist Church or Hastings Veterans Burial Detail. Visitation will be Tuesday the 17th; 5 P.M. - 6 P.M. with family present at the funeral home, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Samuel was born in Omaha, Nebraska on October 7, 1932 to Sam & Dora (McCulley) Batty. The family moved to a farm near Lewiston, Nebraska, and Samuel graduated from Lewiston High School in 1950. He served in the U.S. Navy from March 1951 to March 1955, serving in Korea, Southeast Asia (French Indo China and Taiwan), and hydrogen bomb testing in Bikini. He worked at Montgomery Ward's in Beatrice, N.G.P.L. in Beatrice and Truro, Iowa. He also worked for Trail Blazer Pipeline in Heartwell. Samuel married Marla J. Barnes on June 26, 1955 in Marysville, Kansas. Samuel was on the Beatrice Jaycees Board of Directors, and a member of the Beatrice Youth Recreational Inc. He umpired for the American Softball Association and American Legion Baseball.

He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W., serving on the Funeral Honor Guard. Samuel was also a member of First United Methodist Church, American Legion and Southern Hills Golf Club. Samuel enjoyed family, life and golf.

Samuel Batty was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Richard and Lloyd.
