Hastings resident Samuel Dean “Sam” Colvin, 71, passed away Thursday, February 27, 2025, at Mary Lanning Healthcare, Hastings, NE.
Memorial Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 3, at First United Methodist Church in Hastings with Rev. Lance Clay officiating. There will be no burial at this time. Visitation will be 1-3 p.m. with the family present Sunday, March 2, at the funeral home, and one hour before the service at the church. Memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church or to the family for a memorial to be established at a later date. Samuel Dean Colvin was born January 5, 1954, in the Elsie Otto Maternity Home in Bloomfield, NE. He attended K-12 at Bloomfield Public Schools. He participated in football, basketball and track. He graduated in 1972 and attended Kearney State College where he majored in Political Science and worked in the athletic training department.
He graduated from KSC in May 1976. He married Barbara Johnson on May 29, 1976, in Bloomfield, NE. Sam and Barb started their teaching careers in Winside, NE where Sam was also the boys basketball coach. In the summer of 1978 they moved to Harvard, NE to teach. Over the years in Harvard Sam coached boys’ basketball, track, cross country and served as athletic director.
In 1980 their daughter, Stephanie Brooke was born and in 1983 they were blessed with a son, Tyler Samuel. He was actively involved in the Harvard community and the Harvard Methodist Church. The Colvins joined Lochland Country in 1989 where Sam enjoyed many hours golfing with his buddies.
In 2002 Sam began teaching at Adams Central Public Schools. He taught junior high social studies and through the years served as assistant volleyball coach, a head track coach and assistant athletic director. Sam retired after 39 years of service in public education. He loved teaching and coaching.
The Colvins moved to Hastings in 2006 where he became an active member of the First United Methodist Church.
But besides coaching and watching his kids and grandkids participate in activities, he loved golf, Husker sports and...ice cream. He also loved high school sports and followed many area teams. He was a great Papa to his seven perfect grandkids and spent countless hours playing with them, babysitting and attending their activities. He taught them how to ride bikes, shoot baskets and work hard.
He was preceded in death by his father, Orville (Ike) Colvin; step-father, Ryan Bloomquist; father-in-law, Rodger Johnson; and sister-in-law, Sarah Johnson.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Barbara; daughter, Stephanie Miller (Chad), St Paul, NE; son, Tyler Colvin (Allison) of Columbus, NE; grandchildren, Charlotte, Willa, and Cecelia Miller, Kya, Rylan, Karsyn and Trey Colvin; mother, Janice Bloomquist; sister, Paula Keehr (Mark); and mother-in law, Mary Johnson all of Yankton, SD; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews, many, many friends including his coaching and teaching colleagues and his students and players.
