Sheila Smith

Former Hastings resident, Sheila C. Smith, 79, passed away Thursday, January 19, 2017 at her home in Omaha, Nebraska.

Services will be Monday, January 23, 2017; 2:00 P.M. at First United Methodist Church, Hastings with Pastor Greg Lindenberger officiating. Burial will be Monday, January 23, 2017; 1:00 P.M. in Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Hastings. Memorials may be given to First United Methodist Church or Hastings Public Schools. Visitation will be Sunday, January 22, 2017; 4:00 P.M. - 7:00 P.M. with family present, and Monday, January 23, 2017; 9:00 A.M. - 12:00 P.M. at the funeral home.

Sheila was born December 28, 1937 in Dexter, Iowa to Gale & Marie (Hedke) Darby. She moved to Hastings at an early age and was a lifetime Hastings resident. Sheila graduated from Hastings High School in 1955 and Hastings College in 1959. She married Jim Smith on December 18, 1958; he preceded her in death on February 29, 2000.

Sheila taught school at Hastings Middle School for over 30 years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, League of Women Voters, bridge club, United Methodist Women, and several teachers' organizations. Sheila enjoyed playing bridge, spending time with her family, friends and babies, loved to travel, playing piano, and gardening.

Sheila was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Jim Smith.
